Passionate Hirer Awards 2018 Winners

Our 2018 Passionate Hirer Awards were presented during the first part of the Executive Hire Party on 7 February. Other industry achievers were also highlighted.

For the 2018 Awards, a shortlist of five hirers were nominated from no fewer than 708 depots throughout the UK and Ireland, which had been visited personally by the Show National Visitor Campaign team in the months leading up to the exhibition.

The Finalists were divided into two categories, namely Outstanding Single Depot Hire Company and Outstanding Multi-Depot Hire Company. Following 'mystery shopper' visits and calls to their depots, each was scrutinised under a broad range of criteria including: presentation and functionality of premises; staff enthusiasm and competence; efficiency in handling orders and enquiries; quality of fleet products and delivery vehicles; and innovation in offering a wide range of equipment and exploring new technological opportunities.

The quality of each company’s printed promotional materials and website was also assessed, along with their use of social media and support of local community initiatives

The Winner in the Outstanding Single Depot Hire Company category was Clem Jacob Hire Centre. Established in 2006, it has become a major presence serving the area around its Waterford location and throughout the south east of Ireland. The Award Judges were impressed by the intense enthusiasm, friendliness and positive attitude of all the company’s team, and by their obvious pride in what they do. Also noteworthy is the breadth of its hire services which, besides tool and plant hire, includes powered access machinery and event hire.

The company’s well-presented depot is an eye-catching presence in Waterford, and the business plays a valued role within its local community, sponsoring sports clubs and frequently offering free hire of equipment to support worthy causes.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne based Lord Hire Centres was the Winner in the Outstanding Multi-Depot Hire Company category. The business has nine depots serving the north-east of England and high standards are maintained at all its locations. The company has a comprehensive hire fleet and runs a successful equipment sales operation, with a well-designed e-commerce website. It embraces social media, sending customers regular email newsletters, and undertakes several local community sponsorships.

The Award Judges were greatly impressed by Lords’ carefully planned and thorough approach to staff training and development. It recently achieved accreditation to the revised ISO 9001 quality management standard, and the Judges said the company is a worthy Passionate Hirer Award Winner.

The John Jennings Crosshire Award was presented to Dennis Gwynne, pictured left, recently retired Technical Director of Andrews Sykes. The trophy, which was presented by 2017 Winner Gareth Hayward of Alide Hire, honours an individual who embodies the same passion, skill and commitment for our industry, as John demonstrated throughout his career as a passionate hirer and as EHN’s Crosshire columnist.
